IISc and IIT-Khg in the top 500 Universities in the world

Posted Mon, 09 Apr 2012 04:52:18 -0000

IISc and IIT-Khg, the Indian premier Institutes have made it to the list of the top 500 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ACWU) 2009 prepared by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Published this week, the list accords the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, a world ranking of 303-401, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur a world ranking of 402-501.

However the list is dominated by universities in the US: Harvard University tops the list. The others in the top 10 list are Stanford (2) University of California-Berkley (3), Cambridge University (4), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (5), California Institute of Technology (6), Columbia University (7), Princeton University (8), Chicago University (9) and Oxford University (10).

Separate lists for the top 100 universities in specialized fields were also released. While both the IISc and IIT-Khg secured a rank of 51-77 in the top 100 engineering and technology universities, there was no representation from the country in the list of top 100 universities in natural sciences and mathematics, in life and agriculture sciences, clinical medicine and pharmacy, and the social sciences.

Among the top 100 universities from the Asia-Pacific region, IISc secured a rank of 43-67, while IIT, Kharagpur secured a rank of 68- 106.

Three things. First, there is nothing called IIT-Khg. Please either call it IIT-KGP like we students like to call it over here, or use the full name. Secondly, this is a wake-up call for the IIT = Stanford + Harvard + MIT fanboys. It is a proof of the dismal state of education in India that even our best institutes are ranked at 300 and 400 globally. Rather that celebrate, we should be embarassed. Thirdly, we should not give so much weightage to a Chinese ranking. That said, even established ranking systems have't raked IITs much better

If IITs, IISc need to be ranked well, they need to actually contribute something to the world of science & technology apart from just bookish graduates. What about some, well - technology? Or some scientific findings? Given that in the last half a century the IITs & IISc has produced more graduates than the population for most EU countries, what is the contribution from these guys? Look around you. Show me anything that was made in India or was discovered in India. From practically every PCB in your PC / laptop to even the tar on the road, to the 100s of plastic variants in use today , the steels, technology needed to even purify water, make cars, refine petroleum, run trains, launch satellites , etc are all IMPORTED !! We have become just a nation of guys who say proudly " We can also do it !!"

Do it for the first time guys & then thump your chests !! Do something, anything, other than just cram up a lot of data & formulae to puke out undigested at exams. But that wont happen in a hurry. Coz right from school we encourage kids to parrot science, to recognize patterns of ready made questions and are taught to respond with run of the mill answers memorised to the last word.

Our kids are smart but we dumb them down by forcing them to learn by rote. No wonder all our kids can do well is join up sweat shops exactly like the factories catering to the apparel exports from India to do cyber labour for the cheapest rates in the world!!

Wake up kids. Forget marks at schools Learn your fundamentals well . Comprehend it! If youre teachers suck ( and they will ) go on line - do a wiki on the topic and learn from Wiki & other great sites. Even from Youtube where some really smart profs have hosted lectures for free viewing & down load. Dont get out of school or from your engineering colleges with just great scores. make sure you have learned at least 60% of your syllabus.

Also - it really does not matter which college you are attending. If you want to learn well, its out there on the net. Many Univs have hosted their Intellectual capital out for free. If you have pursued a line in your discipline well, and u know the subject well - you will do well. Coz out in the real world, no one gives a damn where you passed out from. If you can deliver - you are KING !!

JNR's (Fri, 13 Nov 2009) comment is based on misinformation. IISc won't produce Graduates. It's a institute for PG & Doctoral studies and is also supposed to India's science centre. Don't go on world rankings prepared by different groups with their wasted interests. IISc's reputation is worldwide acknbowledged.India's 90% most renound scientists & engineers were associated with IISc. Few exampoles- CV Raman,JC Bose, Bhabha,Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dhawan,Prof. G. N. Ramachandran,C. R. Subramanian,Prof. Harish-Chandra,Prof. C. N. R. Rao& Rangrajan etc.

Yeah, education should teach us how to make money. There is no doubt about that. But the only way that seems to taught to students is just work hard, earn good grades and grab a high paying job. There is nothing wrong or right about this. But there are another ways through which educated minds can earn money i.e. through patents and start ups. Patents give you royalty income and you don't have to think about burning your brains. There is no point in blaming the education system. We as parents or friends need to encourage our student population to take up any of these and shine well.

The only reason why MIT's and Harvard's are #1 is because they know and have an understanding of empowering students. Thais why we find the Bill Gates, the Google founders all from these top notch institutes. Lets spread some awareness amongst people.

like wise iisc is also the same people who rote more get very good cgpa and these guys do not even have the basic knowledge about the subject as a result good research cannot be done as good research requires good clarity of fundamental concepts

today's education is just like 'rota' there is no concept,no practical education,no technique for building up skills of students.to make world class of iits entrance examination should subjective english should be introduced.today some schools provide coaching class for iit examination and huge amount is earned.ithink this type of activities should be banned.121crore population no actul scientist is produced like cv raman,jc bose etc.new iits which are opened are quantative not qualitive.computer science should be banned,no creativity ,just depend on it.
