As a part of assessing how to increase the revenue for the premier institutes, IIT Council has appointed a five – member committee headed by Atomic Energy Commission chief Anil Kakodkar,, which will revisit the fee structure of IITs.
Currently, students are paying Rs 50,000 per annum as tuition fee at the B.Tech courses in the IITs. Besides this, students pay about Rs 20,000 annually for other purposes like accommodation, alumni and admission fees. The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students are exempted from the tuition fee. The IIT Council, which met on October 19, discussed the issue against the backdrop of government starting a loan scheme with subsidised interest rate to help poor students in higher studies, sources said.
