Decision to hike IIT cut-off in +2 opposed

The move of Union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal to hike the cut-off mark in +2 for IIT entrance from 60% to 80% is opposed by many political parties and education activists. Hemant Soren, MP from JMM party, said that “This decision is a conspiracy to prevent students coming from backward class, tribal community and economically poor background. I welcome other political leaders of different parties to unite and fight against the situation.”

“The move is not reasonable as it will lead to increasing stress on the students,” said principal of Delhi Public School (DPS) Akhilesh Chandra Chaturvedi.

Rajendra Chaudhary, Samajwadi Party spokesperson, said that “As high as 80-85 per cent cut off marks are not easily achievable for students of UP Board and they would not even qualify to appear for the entrance test.”

If implemented, this would add to the already existing hurdles that students have to clear for getting admission to the IITs.
