IIT JEE 2012: Follow a strategic approach to your preparation

by Pritika Ghura

The race for India’s most toughest entrance examination, IIT JEE 2012, has begun with the opening of the registration process for the next year, which will see over 500,000 aspirants signing up to compete for 7,000 seats in the 15 IITs across the country.

There is lot of pressure among students to crack this exam as it is their ticket to the prestigious IITs and then a bright career. Industry experts feel that being strong in your fundamentals, stressing more on your strengths and then taking lot of mock exams is the key to success in IIT JEE. Revealing what it takes to get a rank in top 10 of IIT JEE, Vipul Singh from Bhilai, who stood fifth in IIT-JEE 2010, says, “Any average person can make it to the top 10 if he or she starts preparing early for the exam. You need to be focused on your objective for the entire two years of your plus-two to assure yourself a place in the top slot.” It is for this reason that Singh had decided to focus on mathematics and science, apart from participating in a number of quiz competitions to enhance his mental agility and general knowledge.

Industry experts feel that just mugging up the concepts and working overtime is not enough to secure a seat in IITs. It is important that you prepare hard the right way in a regular and sustained manner. It is important that you use every minute at your disposal intelligently without making compromises on the quality of your classroom work. Hence, just being talented is not enough. You need to be focussed, confident and must have a hunger for success.

IIT JEE 2012 will be held on April 8, 2012 (Sunday). It will comprise of two objective-type, three-hour-long papers (9 a. m. to 12 noon; 2 to 5 p. m.) consisting of questions drawn from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. It will be the first time that the IITs have introduced a minimum eligibility criterion of 60 per cent (for the reserved categories it is 55 per cent).

This means that students who want to secure a seat in IITs will have to prepare hard to score well in Board exams. However, Aakash Chaudhry, director, Aakash Educational Services, feels that the eligibility criterion will not make much of a difference because only a negligible number of students who prepare for the IIT-JEE get less than the minimum mark.

When we spoke to IIT JEE 2010 toppers, most of them said that it is important to take 35 to 40 full-length mock exams before appearing for the IIT-JEE. While taking the exam you must follow a strategic approach. Aspirants should attempt the question paper in three stages. In the first stage, candidates should attempt all those questions that take less than a minute to solve. Questions that take more than a minute should be marked. In the second round, the candidates should go for the marked questions.
