With the number of questions asked in IIT-JEE 2011 reduced, this year’s paper was comparatively easier than compared to last year. However with 4.8 lakh of students competing for handful of seats in prestigious IITs, the competition gets fierce. In a chat with Pritika Ghura from Learnhub, Aakash Chaudhry, CEO and Director of Aakash Educational Services Ltd, talks about the paper pattern, students’ reaction and expected cutoffs for IIT JEE 2011.
Q1) Sir, can you please give us your feedback on IIT-JEE 2011, its pattern and the standard of the exam this year as compared to 2010?
Ans) Compared to the last year, the number of questions that were expected in IIT JEE 2011 has reduced. This has also reduced the standard of the examination for most of the students. There is a little change in the question pattern as the number of questions in each section and in total has gone down. Overall the question paper was satisfactory, but compared to last year there has been a notable decline in the vigour of IIT-JEE paper.
Q2) What is the general reaction of students who took the exam today? Did they find it a cakewalk or difficult to crack?
Ans) Surprisingly the Math and Physics section were easier. Keeping aside the ‘Mathematics Phobia’, a candidate can easily score well in Mathematics. However, the performance of a student in Chemistry papers will decide his fate, especially Paper-II Chemistry. The level of Chemistry paper in a way represented the infamous toughness of IIT-JEE. Physics, though was expected to trouble students, didn’t really come across as a hard nut.
Q3) Was there any such discrepancy or any printing error in IIT-JEE-2011?
Ans) Well, last year there were no discrepancies in the paper in technical terms or framing the questions, but this time a question which might have skipped the attention of question setter made its way to the JEE 2011 paper. One question in paper-I of Mathematics was conceptually wrong.
Q4) What is the predicted cut-offs for IIT-JEE 2011?
Ans) On the basis of last year, a cut-off between 190 and 200 is expected for this year’s IIT-JEE.
Q5) This year several reforms were introduced by IIT organisers to ensure transparency. Do you think these reforms will be helpful?
Ans) All the measure will go a long way to ensure that the system becomes transparent. These are helpful, beneficial and extremely crucial to the prospects of candidates undertaking JEE.
Q6) This year approximately 4.8 lakh students will be taking the exam. What is it that extra thing in a student which determines his success? Also, do you think the current selection process is fool-proof or does it have any flaws?
Ans) Well, the JEE has shifted itself significantly closer to the standard which has been set by a CBSE school. So, if a student has a clear understanding of fundamentals and has prepared well for the class X11 Board exam then he/she is more likely to have an edge over others. Selection process does not have any flaw.
Q7) Your last words to students who are preparing for IIT-JEE 2012?
Ans) Well, do you believe in Magic? There is NOTHING like magic, but hard work, along with dedication, commitment and a modicum of luck translate into magic. Work hard and be assured of success.
