Just scoring a good rank in IIT JEE is not enough. To make it to your desired stream and your dream IIT, you must have an in-depth knowledge of what should be your strategy after getting JEE results. The only difference between your rank and IIT is counselling, and you must make wise choices to fill your options.
Our experts take three case studies and devise a plan of action for them. These tips will not only help them to make it to their favourite stream of engineering and preferred IIT, but will help them to get placements in the future.
Those who score good ranks: IIT aspirants who are fortunate enough to score a good rank are a confused lot. As they have an excellent score they can apply in any stream and at any IIT. However, an IITian says such students should target IITs which are located in metros as most multinational companies come to these IITs first during placements. So it may play an important factor while you apply for job.
Those who scored an average rank: Your first preference should be either IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi. Try to secure admission in any one of these two institutions even though if you have to compromise on the branch. In case these two options are not available then go for chemical, civil or even metallurgy in other IITs.
Those who have scored a low rank: Your preference should be on branch rather than a college and try to be in the toppers list throughout the academic year. Also, you can take branches like Msc chemistry in top IITs and get good grades in the 1st year then you can have an option of changing your branch.
Those who could not clear the JEE: Don’t get disheartened as there is life beyond IITs. You can always make it to colleges affiliated with AIEEE, or clear the BITSAT or make it to one of the premiere engineering college. Even taking up a science course in Delhi University or going abroad are other good options for you. If you are still hell bent on IITs, then dropping a year maybe the best option for your. However, experts suggest that dropping a year can be fatal for a student’s career.
Some other expert tips are-:
- Be aware: You should know the JEE opening and closing ranks of 2009 for different engineering streams and you will get an idea which branch and in which IIT you can get a seat.
- Pay counselling fees for other engineering colleges as you don’t want to take a risk in the eventuality of not being able to make it to IITs.
- If you are planning to drop a year, be 100 percent certain as you don’t know whether you will make it to IITs next year or not.
- Even if you get a rank higher than 3000, don’t get disappointed. You can get admission in IIT Roorkee or IT BHU, as both are good options from the point of view of job prospects and masters abroad.
