The minimum distance between the two will be attained after they travel 5 km each. In this case the distance between them will be sqrt(50).
Assume that the distance between them will be minimum after each of them travels x km. Now we have a right angle triangle with the lengths of the perpendicular sides as x and 10 – x. So the closest distance between them is the hypotenuse and the length of this hypotenuse will be minimum at x = 5 (You can take the help of derivatives or quadratic equations basics to conclude that hypotenuse will be minimum at x = 5)
