Dear Shivani, I think you will change your opinion after reading this….

IITians often joke about the most endangered species on their campus: women. Amidst the ongoing debate about OBC quotas, many would quip, “Girls must be given reservation.”

Last year’s JEE result shows that may not be necessary. While their numbers have been steadily rising, this year the percentage has jumped by nearly half.

Of the 54,025 girls who appeared for JEE-2007, 587 have qualified, up from 394 who qualified through JEE-2006. The difference is about 200, a rise of almost 50 per cent in the number of successful girl candidates, though this will still remain a small proportion of the overall number of students across the seven IIT campuses.

I live in Saudi Arabia, and my friend here has gone home to India for his 11th and 12th classes and mainly for IIT coaching. He says that in his coaching institute, most of the girls aren’t able to score well, even though they are the toppers of the school. This, he says is because most of the girls, instead of conceptual learning, go into memorizing the text books, which is sufficient to score well in the AISSE etc. But when it comes to IIT, u gotta be thorough with the basic concepts. Not all the girls are conceptually strong. So in the JEE, the ones that are so get through, while the others generally don’t. So instead of looking at this in a general way, it’d be better to focus in the way you prepare, in my opinion.
